Teaching with Heart: Lessons Learned in a Classroom

Parents See Benefits of AI in Schools, But Need More Info

For the most part, parents approve of AI in schools, though they don’t know enough about how it will be used in their children’s classrooms.

More than two thirds of parents believe that the benefits of AI to education either outweigh or are equal to potential drawbacks, according to a poll by the National Parents Union. Only 16 percent of parents feel the downsides negate any potential benefits.

Parents are uncertain about how AI can improve their children’s learning. Forty percent have little general information about artificial intelligence and 60 percent have heard little to nothing about how to apply AI to education.

School leaders need to inform parents about how they’re leveraging artificial intelligence in schools. But I question if they have figured this out. Administrators in my district haven’t yet discussed how teachers should or shouldn’t be using AI nor have they invested in software to make this happen.

Traditionally, schools are slow to adopt the latest technology. Yet, it would be great if educators and administrators open a discussion about how AI should or shouldn’t be integrated in classes. It seems that AI can make teachers’ job easier by helping create lessons and assessments. But students can complete assignments by simply asking AI to do the work for them, resulting in no learning taking place. It’s time we began to talk about leveraging AI’s positive traits, while eliminating negative ones.
