“While there are a handful of teacher tasks that generative AI tools can replicate, teachers also have so many other strengths and responsibilities that would be very unlikely to be replaced by those tools.” –Education Week 8-31-23
The good news is that AI cannot replace what teachers do in the classroom everyday. Yes, the technology can help make educators’ jobs easier, but the human interaction between teacher and student is key to learning, and AI cannot yet achieve that connection.
There are six things that teachers do that AI can’t, according to Education Week. They are the following:
1. Teaching Critical Thinking;
2. Building Relationships with Students;
3. Motivating Students.
4. Creating a Positive Learning Environment;
5. Providing High-Quality Feedback on Student Performance;
6. Attending to Students’ Basic Needs.
So teachers, at the beginning of this school year, start establishing strong relationship with students. Don’t just sit behind your desk and click on a button to project a technology based activity. Get up, interact with kids. Make them see how much you care about them. Learn their names quickly. Find out what makes them tick. Show how you like them. Better yet, make them laugh. Have fun in class. They will see how you like teaching–and them–and they will be more willing to get work done in your class. After all, you don’t want a robot replacing you, do you?
